WHO WE ARE

A network built on exchange, not tourism

TheExperimentinInternationalLivingisaninternationalmovementpioneeredbyDr.DonaldB.WattoftheUSAin1932.Itisoftenassumedthatasingleindividual'sbehaviourcannotaffectthewiderworld-thatinthefaceofgreatconflicts,onepersonistoosmalltohelp.Yetmanyofthoseconflictsgrowfromawebofdistrust,distortedviewsandprejudicethatstandsbetweenusandbetterunderstanding.

ForthisreasontheExperimentbelievestheindividualisanindispensablemeansoffurtheringpeace-asthepreambleoftheUNESCOCharterstates:"Sincewarsbegininthemindsofmen,itisinthemindsofmenthatthedefencesofpeacemustbeconstructed."

Eversince1932,theFamilyHomeStayhasbeenattheheartoftheexperience.EachExperimenterlivesthelifestyleofahostfamily—sharingitsdailyactivities,values,friendsandhopes.Fromsuchanexperience—availableinmorethansixtycountries—theExperimenteremergeswithheightenedself-awareness,greaterfluencyinasecondlanguage,andaconvictionthat,withgoodwillandeffort,thedifferencesthatseparateuscanbeovercomeintheinterestofourcommonhumanity.

TheinternationalheadquartersoftheExperimentarelocatedinBrattleboro,Vermont,USA.
